Monoculars

Some people confuse monoculars with telescopes or with binoculars mistakenly. Those who might have seen the famous movie ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ would have seen pirates using particular type of gadgets for seeing distant objects which look like telescope. These are in fact monoculars. Monoculars work like a telescope in the sense that only one eye is used for visualizing the distant object as is used in a telescope. Monoculars are portable and handy devices like binoculars. These are low powered telescopes or spotting scopes. The miniature monoculars are smaller than binoculars and spotting scopes.

Monoculars are useful for the people who are visually impaired and can not properly see and distinguish the distant objects. It is easy to carry monoculars anywhere due to their extremely smaller size. The monoculars are as thick as a pen and not bigger than a thumb. Take care of your monoculars for they can slip from your pocket.

Monoculars are handy instruments. If you want a miniature device which can be easily taken from one place to another, monocular is a good option for you. Monoculars can also serve well in place of magnifiers. Just by turning over a monocular, it functions as a magnifier.

Monoculars are not recommended for making the detailed observations or for executing serious tasks or activities such as hunting, astronomy, surveillance and birding. Although, monoculars can prove helpful in some unexpected situations for visualizing any object when your binocular is not available at that place. Binoculars give better vision and clear view than monoculars e.g. bird watching monoculars. Therefore, binoculars are recommended and preferred for such activities.

The magnification power of monoculars ranges from 5 to 6. Magnifying power refers to the power of enlargement i.e. the number of times an object is enlarged from its normal size. 6 x 15 is a monocular’s first number.

The measurement of front lenses of a monocular is 6 x 15 millimeters also known as second number. The optical performance becomes better and improves with the increasing of the second number. However, lenses of high second number are heavy in weight and pose difficulty in carrying monocular. Therefore, such lenses are not used. The quality of a monocular depends on the cost of a monocular. You will have to pay more for an expensive monocular which offers high quality. The image brightness depends on the lens coating. It improves monocular vision. Fully multi-coated monoculars are regarded as the best monoculars. You may purchase a water proof monocular if you require one. But if you do not need it, you can buy a conventional type.

There are various popular types and brands of monoculars such as Tasca monocular, Night Owl Cyclops Compact night vision monocular, Vivitar monocular, Eschenback monocular, Yukon monocular, Diplopia monocular, etc. Night vision monoculars and scientific monoculars are other types that are very useful. Monocular can be used for getting acquired traumatic vision. The monoculars serve as good alternatives for binoculars.
